Graduate Certificate in Urban Studies
Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Urban Studies offers an interdisciplinary concentration in social science approaches to urban policy issues. The Certificate is not a stand-alone program, but is anchored by and incorporated into participating graduate programs.
Requirements
The Certificate is comprised of four graduate courses or seminars taken from a list of designated offerings plus a 3 SH Urban Capstone project. Students seeking to complete the Certificate must first be admitted directly into a participating graduate program and need not formally register for the Certificate until the semester prior to that in which they take the Urban Capstone. All courses to be included in the Certificate must be completed before the student is permitted to participate in the Capstone, normally offered in the spring semester.
Not counting the Urban Capstone, course and seminar selection must span at least three different programs or disciplines, and no more than two of the four courses or seminars may be taken in the student's home program. No more than 4 SH should be taken as an independent or directed study, and only then with the permission of the Certificate program administrator (the associate dean of the School of Social Science, Urban Affairs, and Public Policy or designee). The total number of semester hours involved will vary, depending on mix of courses taken. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all relevant urban studies courses to get the Certificate. Completion of the Certificate is validated by the administrator of the program, and is reflected as a separate designation on the student's graduate transcript.
Courses
A list of courses included in the Graduate Certificate in Urban Studies as of Fall 2008 will be posted in August.
